We all know the story. Tony Stark is hit in the chest with tiny bits of metal that become embedded in his body. To keep the metal from going to his heart and killing him, he has to have a super magnet in his chest. Tony uses his knowledge to overcome his circumstances and builds a suit to escape from enemy hands. An ordinary man faced with extraordinary circumstances. In the face of adversity, Tony Stark becomes Iron Man. He becomes a Super Hero.
I know; I have odd epiphanies at random times. For some reason, I got to thinking about how Tony Stark, a normal man, becomes a Super Hero...and it led me to ask myself a question.
In the face of adversity, is there a Super Hero in us all?
I like to think so. You can Google stories of everyday people who do extraordinary things. I suggest checking out http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/cnn.heroes/index.html if you don't trust me. There are so many people who stand up in the face of adversity, don their capes, and go to work making the world a better place.
The most recent example is that of Malala Yousufzai, the young girl who spoke out for women's rights and was then targeted by the Taliban for her words. In the face of adversity, she stood up knowing that it might not end well...that she might not live because of it...but that she could make a difference. What an inspiration she is. And she's not alone. There are many that go unnamed that pull off their suits and ties or their scarves and high heels to reveal a Super Hero underneath.
God didn't make us ordinary you guys...we're all extraordinary. Not all heroes can fly and smash through walls. No, real heroes take a terrible situation and rise above it. Real heroes reach out their hands to help a perfect stranger. Heroes come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and backgrounds.
You may never have to use your powers. You might never need them. But next time you start to doubt your self worth, remember this...there is an "S" on your chest. If ever you may need a hero, keep in mind, YOU are a hero. No one is born super. It is the choices we make when things get tough that make us heroes.
